While listening to Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World, I became interested in the argument of cover vs. original. See my thoughts below. (Note the witty remarks.)
Songs Better Covered
Songs Better Covered
2. All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan) Second best cover by Dave Matthews Band. All three are pretty solid, each with their own feel, own genre. (Eddie Vedder also covered it. And then there's the Neil Young/Pearl Jam version too... and a whole lot more Neil Young collaborations.)
3. Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down – Johnny Cash (Kris Kristofferson) No brainer.
4. Hallelujah – Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen) Again, a no brainer. Jeff Buckley’s soothing voice takes this to a whole new level, this version sounds like a cup of tea on a cold, rainy day.
5. Landslide – Smashing Pumpkins (Fleetwood Mac) Quite simply, this is a good thing.
6. Baker Street – Foo Fighters (Gerry Rafferty) I’m not even going to pretend that I wouldn’t like anything the Foo Fighters have done more than anything else conceivable. I am biased, and I’m fine with that. Besides, this cover is AWESOME! Gerry, thank you for writing this so that the Foo's could take it and run with it! Your version is OK, but better for elevators than radios, no offense.

Covers that shouldn’t have happened
1. The Kids are Alright – Pearl Jam (Pete Townshend) I really enjoy Pearl Jam, but The Who make this song what it is. It really comes down to grunge vs rock: with this song it has to be rock.
2. Gettin’ Jiggy With It – Phish (Will Smith) I don’t even know what to say about this choice.

3. Helter Skelter – U2 (The Beatles) While this is a valid cover, Bono is just currently annoying me, and so by default he has fallen into this list. Perhaps if Bono could return to his post as band front-man and tone down his lofty political ambitions… (have you seen the pictures of him hanging out with Obama?! Slightly overkill.) Oh, and then there's the Motley Crue version, not to be missed.
Strange Covers
Strange Covers
1. Wonderwall – Ryan Adams (Oasis) Um, yeah. No.
2. Act Nice and Gentle – Black Keys (The Kinks) Strangely awesome. I approve.
3. Hurt – Johnny Cash (Nine Inch Nails) I feel like this should be the other way around: NIN would cover Johnny Cash… but this works.
4. We Will Become Silhouettes – The Shins (Postal Service) This cover doesn’t strike me as better or worse, which means it was probably unnecessary.
What I'm listening to right now: "Leaving on a Jet Plane" covered by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. best. cover. ever.
